IV. Learn more about Class III+ Armor Pistol Plates
1. How heavy is the plate armor?
Level III+ Special Threat Ceramic Body Armor panels weigh only 4.4 lbs each. Compared to other steel plate armor plates, these plates are significantly lighter and fit more comfortably in the plate frame. We have a variety of plate models to choose from, make sure you choose the one that fits your needs!
2. Is it illegal to wear body armor in public?
It is legal to wear body armor or body armor in public; for self-defense or emergency situations, as long as your local law enforcement agency or the laws of the state where you live do not prohibit anyone from wearing it. If you want to wear body armor under your clothes or suit, or if you feel comfortable wearing body armor in public, this is the option for you. Wearing body armor in public places, businesses and schools is not illegal in the United States. Some states may have laws requiring a license or permit to own a bulletproof vest in their jurisdiction, but it cannot require someone to be on his/her private property or in a public place (airport, bus terminal, shopping mall, etc.) Wear a bulletproof vest when traveling. However, outside of these areas, you can generally wear body armor without any legal restrictions or filling out paperwork under state law.
3. Can plate armor block bullets?
Not all armor plates stop all bullets; specifically, only soft or hard armor for a specific range of bullet calibers will stop those bullets from penetrating the armor when fired from the barrel. Law enforcement officers wear body armor that, in the case of use against themselves, at least stops bullets from their own duty weapons. For example, the standard 9mm pistol in the United States and the bullets fired from it are generally rated for soft body armor panels that stop most common pistol bullets from penetrating. However, the hard armor plates capable of stopping rifle bullets were heavier than the soft armor versions and were hot, potentially causing burns if not worn under certain clothing. One such plate might stop a bullet at close range, but not a bullet fired at anyone wearing it from a hundred yards away. Plate type is also important when considering what kind of projectile will penetrate armor; for example, many types of ammunition (especially military surplus or special purpose ammunition) may have different properties for specific armor depending on caliber size or shape Factors like (ball, flat, half-cut), the alloy used in the bullet, and how fast it goes. It should be noted that soft armor can often stop certain types of projectiles fired by pistols at a greater range than projectiles fired by rifles are rated to; this is because the higher velocity is directly related to the depth to which the projectile penetrates an object and speed.
4. What will stop armor plates above level 3?
Level 3+ stops light penetrating rounds like the M855A1 Green tip, but not .30-06 APM2 rounds like Level IV.
5. What is the armor plate made of?
The Level 3+ plates are made from a combination of PE and ceramic with an outer layer of abrasion resistant nylon surrounding the armor. Law enforcement officers are now outfitting their concealable pistol-grade body armor with plate armor in case they need rifle protection too.
